Too much of anything is good for nothing

Too much of anything is good for nothing. That proverb by the old folks indicates that too much or too little of anything is bad. This has been true all the while as it is proven that we need a balance in everything we do in our life.

We need sugar to provide energy, but extreme consumption of it will cause diabetes.

A lot of Malaysians love Western countries during winter due to its cooling weather, but extreme coldness will cause frostbite and probably death.

Workout at the gym is a healthy thing to do, but extreme workouts will injure and damage the muscles.

Same goes to politics and advocacy; it is the right of the people to fight for the rights of their race and religion, but when it is too much, it is EXTREMISM.

KW_20141121_column

History itself has proven again and again that extremism keeps repeating, despite of many are aware of it.

Biblioclasm or libricide, the practice of burning or destroying books or other written material is one of the extremism methods that history has known since centuries ago.

In 213 BC, the first emperor of the Qin dynasty of ancient China burned the books and buried Confucian scholars to prohibit all heterodox thinking.

During the siege of Baghdad in 1258, the House of Wisdom along with all the libraries in Baghdad was destroyed by the Ilkhanate Mongol forces. The books from Baghdad libraries were thrown into Tigris River in such quantities that the river ran black with the ink from the books. Scientists, philosophers and academicians were also killed by the forces.

The German Student Union conducted a book burning campaign in the 1930s to ceremonially burn books in Nazi Germany and Austria by classical liberal, anarchist, socialist, Communist, Jewish and other authors whose writings were viewed as subversive or whose ideologies undermined the National Socialist administration.

Earlier a few months ago, Ibrahim Ali sparked a controversy by suggesting to burn the bibles written in Malay.

And then we have the sex blogger Alvin Tan and her then girlfriend posting their Ramadan bah kut teh on Facebook. Then we have the activist Ali Abd Jalil asking for the royal institution to be abolished and that he was not afraid to die for saying so.

Extremism has existed since the birth of humans when we have certain group of community trying to get too much of rights for themselves while ignoring others.

I suppose most of us have to agree that the freedom of speech in Malaysia has increased compared to the past decades. Some may argue that it’s due to government’s inability to control the social media sites which belongs to foreign countries. Whether we like it or not, I think we must say that a lot of people have been making criticisms openly without fear or favour.

In the past, the people in our community restricted ourselves from saying sensitive remarks and words especially those from the May 13th generation. That generation has always used the tolerance or avoiding conflict method.

As our country has developed since 1969, so do the mindset of our community. The young generations are not bonded by the May 13th fear or any historical baggage anymore as they have never experienced such bloodshed and conflict. They are more daring to speak out their minds compared to their fathers and grandfathers. But sometimes, they voice out in an overly extreme manner such as the cases of Alvin Tan and Ali Abd Jalil.

Yes, it is their right to speak and voice out. But when a community is in a transitional phase towards a more freedom and democratic society, not everyone is able to accept the criticism of others towards their beliefs and culture. And Malaysia is going through that phase now. Yet, even the people in a country with real freedom can’t accept criticisms that don’t make sense.

I have always heard from a lot of people that they are neutral, unbiased and moderate. These are some of the characteristics that made them look holy or divine. Unfortunately, I have also seen that these people hardly practice what they preach. Being a Chinese, I have always heard a lot of friends complained of the loud azan during the Muslim prayers. But have they ever thought of the loud getai singers during the Hungry Ghost Festivals or any Chinese festival celebrations that last until late night?

Being moderate does not only mean you are considerate for your ownself or your own race. It requires huge courage to actually stand up and fight for everybody in a fair manner. And sometimes being moderate, you have to face some extremists claiming that ‘you are selling out your own race.’ In this case, if we want others to be fair to the activities in Chinese celebrations, then we have to be fair to the azan as well.

Every now and then, we have extremists voicing out their biased opinion, and making us wonder whether when can we achieve the real racial harmony that we have always dreamed of. Then, there are also voices of the moderates that hits back those extremists. But it is difficult to really determine whether which is the minority and majority as there are many people who are very opined but remains quiet to themselves.

Nevertheless, there is always hope for a racial harmony as long as the moderates still exists. All we have to do is to keep on educating and spreading the right thoughts of moderation to the people. The transformation will not happen in few days, few months or few years. It takes a long period and I do believe one day, the Malaysian dream will come true.

“What is objectionable, what is dangerous about extremists is not that they are extreme but that they are intolerant. The evil is not what they say about their cause, but what they say about their opponents.” – Robert F. Kennedy

TERAS UTAMA 3: PEMBANGUNAN BELIA

TERAS UTAMA 3: PEMBANGUNAN BELIA

Saudara-saudari sekalian,

4) MEMPERJUANGKAN PENURUNAN HAD UMUR BELIA

KITA BERSAMA

Manifesto Kita Bersama

Salam sejahtera, rakan-rakan belia,

Belia Kita, belia Malaysia telah menjadi lebih kuat lagi, lebih berupaya sejak belia-belia yang terdahulu;

Ooi Zhi Yi

WE TOGETHER

Manifesto Kita Bersama

Dear You(th),

Our Youth, Malaysian Youth is stronger than ever, empowered than ever;

Thanks to the leadership of YB Khairy Jamaluddin and his team in the Ministry of Youth and Sports. The Youth Parliament idea and its implementation have achieved a milestone, a point for all Malaysian youth to celebrate our empowerment.

But as much as the power is given to us, youth, must not misuse the power. We must use the power for the benefit and the betterment for our youth community.

As the Youth Parliament moves forward and commence, it will need a team of collaborative and to represent the voice of the youth community. A representative who can bring the concerns of the youth up to the next level. A representative who can mobilize everyone connected to the Youth Parliament and strengthen the organization and to utilize the platform as a means for educating, developing and inspiring youth.

I am confident that I have the understanding of the youth community, the ideas and the deep passion to develop the youth community that qualifies me as one of the representative.

In my articles and inforgraphics that follows up through the campaigning period, I will explain the three pillars and five concerns of my candidacy for the Member of Youth Parliament.

Three Key Pillars

  • Malaysian Unity
  • Youth Empowerment
  • Youth Development

Five Key Concerns

  • High Cost of Living
  • Housing & Urban Living
  • Education
  • Transport & Infrastructure
  • Environment Sustainability

The Three Key Pillars are the practical action steps that I will propose and take collaboratively with fellow representatives together with a team of passionate Malaysian youth.

Meanwhile, the Five Key Concerns are voices and issues concerning the youth that I will highlight to the Government through the advocacy campaigns.

The Youth Parliament has never been about any particular individual, it should be a collaboration of the representatives and also every single youth in the country working together. And it is WE, TOGETHER.

Yours sincerely,

Ooi Zhi Yi

UN General Assembly: Moderation

General Assembly, is the official meeting of the members of an organization or of their representatives.

Last week, people throughout the globe kept their eyes and ears on one of the largest General Assembly; the 69th United Nations (UN) General Assembly held at the UN Headquarters in New York City.

UN General Assembly

Many were inspired by the speech of Emma Watson advocating for gender equality and Leonardo DiCaprio  addressing the crowd on climate change. It is always inspiring to see influential figures campaigning for a good cause because people are more likely to follow their footsteps.

Apart from these popular figures in the world, one of the topic that has been discussed that has caught my attention is MODERATION.

This issue was raised none other than our own Malaysian Prime Minister, Dato’ Seri Najib Razak. His popularity in the country or internationally is another issue, but let’s discuss about moderation which is far more important.

From his speech, there are several sentences that has caught my attention.

“The fight against extremism is not about Christians versus Muslims or Muslims versus Jews but moderates versus extremists of all religion.”

“By demonstrating moderation in the political process, we can ensure no one is left outside society.”

“By practicing moderation in religion, we can marginalize the extremists.”

“We must break the cycle where one group gains power only to wield it against the other. We should commit to more inclusive politics.

As far as I am concerned of all religions that existed in the world, there is none of any religion that teaches hatred and causing pain to one another. All religions teaches morality and showing respect to one another. It is the extremists that incites hatred into the people and eventually causes pain.

The pain, physically or emotionally caused by extremists might have caused them to gain power, but at the same time it creates hatred to the ones that are in pain and therefore seek for a revenge in the future. And thus, this creates a cycle that will never ends and both sides keeps on hurting one another until someone decided to become moderate and put it a stop.

As a youth and my peers which will have many more years ahead to live in the country, we should take the initiative to advocate for moderation among each other. Let us marginalize extremism.

I believe moderation is one of the major key to a stronger and better country. I believe in moderation. We believe in moderation.

“What is objectional, what is dangerous about extremists is not they are extreme but they are intolerant. The evil is not what they say about their cause, but what they say about their opponents.” – Robert F. Kennedy

The Voices of the Youth

Democracy existed in Malaysia since decades ago.

63 years ago, our forefathers witnessed the first local election in the George Town municipal council. 59 years ago, the first Malaya General Elections before the nation achieved its independence. The people of Malaysia have witnessed and conducted democracy at different levels; in the Government, in organizations, and even students in school. Sometimes, when family needs to decide where to go for dinner, they vote. Today, as a nation, we have achieved another new milestone, which is the election for Youth Parliament.

I am proud to be one of the generation that lived, not only to see the birth of the Youth Parliament, but to participate in it.

My fellow Malaysian youth,

I was born, bred and taught in Malaysia as most of us are. As typical Asians, we were always taught from young that we must listen and obey to our parents, our teachers and those who are older than us. We were told that we must not defy our parents words or we will be deemed as a rebel. Some parents even go to the extreme of deciding on their children’s education, job and even love for them. It is a norm for a typical Asian family that “adults command, children listen”.

Please don’t get me wrong. I totally agree that respect to the elders is one of the most important value of all and I am definitely proud that all Malaysian families teaches that. But at the same time, I believe in youth’s right to voice their thoughts and expression. Youth may not be right but so do adults, that is why there are lifelong-learning courses available throughout the world. It shows that adults needs to learn too.

Youth today, has the opportunity of experiencing early education; some smarter kids even have the ability to enter the university at a much younger age. With the advancement of technology and internet, youth can obtain extensive information and learn almost about anything and everything. And the Government accepted the idea. They accepted the idea by providing us an official platform to voice out our ideas and our needs; the Youth Parliament.

Today, I am proud to be nominated as one of the candidate to contest as the Youth Parliament member. And today, I say to all Malaysians across this great nation; I am contesting not to lead you. I am contesting to bring your voices, your ideas, your suggestions throughout the nation. I am contesting to bring all of us, youth – together to form a force to bring development for the nation. I am contesting for the betterment of ourselves – YOUTH.

My fellow Malaysian youth of today, we are better equipped with information to make better analytic decisions compared to the previous generations when they were at our age. Youth today does not necessarily need to be only a follower, we are able to lead. Let us do this together.

KITA BERSAMA!
